Where the Wild Things Are

Last night, I read Where the Wild Things Are to the kids. Will was fascinated by the sea monster featured in it. This morning on the way to school, he kept telling me that he saw a sea monster in the trees. I kept saying no you didn't. Sea monsters aren't real. Then he started crying. He continued to cry all the way to school proclaiming "I DID SEE A SEA MONSTER! MY EYES ARE NOT PLAYING TRICKS ON ME!" He was so mad that I didn't believe him.

Mornings at the Eubanks

Weekday mornings are chaos, to say the least, at our house. Here's the rundown of this morning.
5:30 am
Kaity from her room: "MOMMY!" (not crying or upset, it was demanding that I come get her).
She comes to our bed where she continues to hum and squirm.

6:30 am
I get in the shower and immediately am joined by a naked little girl. "I want to shower, too."
In she goes and then spends the next 20 minutes singing He's Got the Whole World in His Hands at the top of her lungs.

6:50 am
Put Kaity back in bed with daddy. Get myself ready.

7:00 am
Move Kaity to couch, get Will up, turn on Curious George. Make my tea and fix my breakfast. Sit down to eat my breakfast and a naked, but clean, little girl wants to sit with me and put her fingers in my food.

7:15 am
Finally, get a dress on Kaity - no panties. Will still watching cartoons.

7:30 am
Will's turn to turn off the tv. Lots of crying from Kaity. Will gets dressed and has to do his chores. Finally get panties on Kaity.

7:45 am
"I want breakfast!" and, of course, neither want the same thing. Fix leftover garlic toast for Kaity (it was supposed to be for my lunch) and butter toast for Will. Oh, and I forgot to make the chocolate milk. Gotta make chocolate milk.

7:50 am
"I want more!" Too bad.

7:55 am
Looking for shoes. Have to comb out Kaity's hair - it's now in incredible knots because it's dried.

8:00 am
Send kids out to feed rabbits. Put watch in - the battery died this morning. Load all of our stuff into the truck. Move truck around to rabbits. Help feed.

8:10 am
Buckle kids in truck.

8:20 am
Leaving house (finally). Kaity says, "I forgot to brush my teeth!" Too bad, brush after school.

8:25 am
Will "I saw a sea monster in the trees!" (see previous post) Lots of crying.

8:40
Get to school. Take Will to his class. Take Kaity to her class. Spend 10 minutes trying to pry her off of me.

9:05
Finally made it to work. Whew. Is my day done?

W=Wonderful for Will

Will's been getting great reports at school lately and has also really been helping at home. Today, he came in to clean his room, with just a little whining. Normally, he asks for me to help him because he "needs a toy box" or so he tells me because he doesn't know where everything goes. I came in today and I could see his floor and he'd made his bed as best as he could. I helped him put his clean clothes away. I did look under his bed and in his closet which is where he'd stuffed everything. I didn't say anything to him because he was so pleased with himself. He then helped me with the clean and dirty dishes. If he does this all week, we'll have to think of something special to do for him next week. Any ideas? It needs to be cheap.

Scot is Pokey

Kaity told Scot yesterday that he was pokey after rubbing his beard stubble. Here's the conversation they had.

Kaity: "you're pokey, uncle scot. why are you pokey?"
Scot: "because i'm lazy"

Kaity then rubs her face and announces to everyone:

"I'm not lazy!"

Kaity and Papa

As you know, we've been having some disobedience issues in our house recently. Mainly with Will, but Kaity is always in the mix. For Will, disobedience is a relatively new thing. For Kaity, it's always been there.

Anyways, last night they were eating dinner at Papa's house. John and I were supposed to go to a class, but opted out at the last minute. We were actually going to get to eat a quiet dinner at home. About the time we're fixing our plates, the door opens and in comes a crying Kaity. John's talking with her as I'm answering the phone. It's Papa. Normally, he calls as soon as she leaves their house, so that I can watch her on her way home. This wasn't a good sign if he was calling and she was already home.

Papa: "Did Kaity make it home?"
Me: "Yes"
Papa: "I disciplined her because she wasn't sitting at the dinner table." (this is one of Papa's rules he sticks with)
Papa: "She got made and left without telling me."

Apparently, after she got in trouble, she decided she didn't like Papa anymore and ran away (at least she ran home) without telling him. He didn't know it until he went looking for her a few minutes later. Luckily, we were home since normally on Tuesday nights we're not.

So, she spent a few more minutes in her room in time out, had a very hard time calming down, and then had to call Papa and apologize. She was still so upset all she could get out was:

"SSOORRRYY PPAAPPPAA" (imagine that with the huffing and sniffling of a 3 year old)

I then had to call my mom and tell her. Grandma, of course, insisted that Kaity explain what happened. Which set Kaity off again into more tears because she was embarrassed and had to tell Grandma.

Later, I asked Kaity what she's going to do next time and she said "listen to Papa." Good girl.

It doesn't even look like the same image, does it?

Here's the original.

And, here's the photoshopped version. It's a little dark, but I'm learning.

Playing with Photoshop

This is a picture mom recently took at Apollo Beach of the kids. I think they're pretty darn cute in it.

I'm trying out some new Photoshop actions at work and thought I would apply them here. Now it looks like a watercolor.

I really like this one. It's two tone with blue instead of black and white.

My son, the butterfly

Will is still young enough to enjoy dressing up as an insect even if he has to wear wings.

Kids and Brand Names

When did marketing to children become so prevalant? We've recently started taking greater stock of our purchases, budget, commercials, marketing, etc. and it's amazing how much is marketed to children. Personally, I find this very wrong.

This became very real in my house this weekend when Will needed new shoes. "I want skechers" - the brand name that some of the other little boys have. I could tell him any of the shoes are skechers and he'd be happy.

I took him up to Rack Room and they have mostly skechers anyways which is unfortunate. I tried to get him to try on some nikes, but the cool shoe boxes with superheroes on them that were at his eye level (of course) caught his eye. And, of course, they were skechers. I asked him if he liked the shoes or the shoe box and he said both. At least he's honest.

So, I ended up getting him skechers in a size too big because they didn't have his size. And, they did end up being the amount I had budgeted for his shoes. We talked a little about not always getting what you want and buying within our budget, but I could tell that he didn't really understand. We're going to have to work on that.

Check out Will in the hammock!

He's on my garden blog and having a great time!

BTW - Will got an "outstanding behavior" comment from his teacher this week. If he keeps this up, we might just have to do something special for him.

I'm Free! At least for a few days.

So, the kids just left with Aunt Alli on their trip to Grandma and Grandpa's house, and I'm all alone. WOO HOO!! I'm so excited. The last couple days the "witching hour" (the hour right after we get home from school wheb it's chaos) has been marked with Kaity throwing many, many hissy fits. Something she's very good at. They go kinda like this.

Kaity: "I CAAANN'T FIND MY PIINNKK BLLLAAANKKKKIIIEEEE!!!!" (this special blankie is the only thing in the last three years that can get her to calm down or stop crying. it's better than a pacifier. when it's missing the world stops.)

Me: "Did you look in your bedroom or in the kitchen?" (maybe the last place you put it down this morning)

Kaity: "I CAAANN'T FIND IT."

I get up and walk her to it where it's on the floor directly in front of her. Then...

Kaity: "I NEEEDDD WHITE MILK!!" (in our house we call it white milk because Will drinks chocolate milk. Kaity's white milk can only be in a certain sippy cup and it has to be heated up in the microwave and you can't shake it before you give it to her)

Me: "In a few minutes" (I'm currently catching up on my blogs and figure she can wait.)

Kaity: "White milk, mommy!"

Kaity: "Been a few minutes, mommy!" (actually only one)

Kaity: "Now, mommy?"

Kaity: "Mommy?"

Kaity: "I NEEEDD WHITE MILK!"

Me: "Okay, okay I'm getting it."

Will (from the other room after magically hearing I was getting Kaity's white milk): "Can I have some chocolate milk?"

So, the next few days should be nice and quiet. I'm really looking forward to it. But, I'll be ready for them to come home this weekend!

Oh No, I'm a Soccer Mom!

When did that happen?!? I didn't think I was old enough for that. Or that my kids were old enough to play organized sports. But, somehow, soccer mom status snuck up on me. Today, I had to go to Sports Authority to get Will another pair of shin guards because the last pair I got him were too small. I guess we'll save those for Kaity. So, it's begun. Sports equipment, sports drinks, Saturday mornings on the field, hauling camp chairs around constantly, etc. The only thing I'm missing is a mini van. Might have to wait a little bit for that one. For now, I'll be the only soccer mom with a 4-door truck. So, I guess I haven't totally graduated to the soccer mom status yet.

Disobedience

I had a little problem with Will tonight. When we got home, I told him that he could have a few jellybeans, but no chocolate bunny. The chocolate bunny was for after dinner. I know he heard me because he then repeated it to Kaity. A few minutes later a look up when I hear the familiar crinkle of candy wrappers. Will has opened has bunny and is eating it! I made him put it away and sent it to his room. Instead of getting upset and crying like he normally does, he got quite an attitude. He sat in front of his door and wouldn't let me in. An hour and a half later, he was still sitting there. Finally, daddy got him to start helping clean up his room and he was ready to be a "good boy" again. I expect this kind of behavior from Kaity, but not from him. It was interesting to see him so mad.

Bunny Pictures

Sawyer

April

April and Sawyer

Will got his new bunnies (although don't tell Kaity that - one of them she's claimed. She just can't decide which). He named them April and Sawyer. April is pretty calm and has been well handled. She's a little overweight, but not bad, and very soft. Sawyer hasn't been handled as much. He's on the small side. He seems sweet but he freaked out this morning when we went to check on them. I think he's just scared. Will is excited. And, the 4-H projects begin!
